EMPOWERING TODAY'S YOUTH

I wanted to thank Legacy Magazine and Legacy South Florida for honoring our great work in 2021 as Top Black Educators. We look to continue making a difference in the lives of students for years to come.

Our Program

The entities of our program involve exposing students to activities that promote career awareness, experiencing education success, and making good choices. These lessons fall under the three branches of the program, which are Career Workshops and Teen Mentoring. I designed the model to keep middle school students on track to high school graduation.

To show mastery at the end of the program, we expect students to:

  • Complete a Ten-year outlook plan outlining their Career Pathways

  • Show a minimum of a 10% increase in academic achievement and attendance, along with a 10% decrease in negative behaviors based on mentoring sessions.

  • Display long-term success and fewer occurrences of negative stimuli.

Community

Our target community includes students from the South Florida area in need of guidance and support. Data show there were 11,355 infractions by African Americans (21%), Hispanics (73%), and Caucasians (6%) leading to an indoor suspension in Dade County School. 17,672 students in Broward County Schools, African Americans (62%), Hispanics (22%), and Caucasians (12%) are suspended indoors (FLDOE Division of Accountability 15-16). Florida has endured an increase rate of graduation statewide from 76.5% to 82.3%. Hispanic males (77.9%), African American males (69.4%), and females (80.3%) fall below state graduation levels (Florida High School Cohort 2013-2017).

Need

Today’s youth face various barriers during their educational career. One of these barriers is failure in the traditional school setting. As the statistics above show, many of our children need the academic, social support, and psychological services offered by our program. 2ndChance's goal is to bridge the gap and re-establish the desire to learn.

We will provide children with tools to launch a fresh outlook on why education is the best gift they can give to themselves. We will join other programs that have many of the same ideas as we do. However, our experience and inside track make us the better choice to make this work for students and the community in which they live.

Making a Difference

"One Child at a Time"

At 2ndChance students will engage in activities to learn about careers of interest, the education and skills needed to pursue careers of choice. By means of the CareerOneStop Platform and direct instructions students will learn to make informed career decisions through awareness and understanding of individual qualities that contribute to success in the workplace. The final project will be a completed Educational Plan with a ten-year outlook.

Building a Better Future

2ndChance Teen Mentoring

The Teen Mentoring program will focus on three areas: Academic performance, attendance, and modification of inappropriate behaviors. Character Education will be used as the primary curriculum to teach students the skills they need to become model students. At the end of the program students will complete a project outlining at least five skills they want to practice for the upcoming school-year.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

“As an educator, I have witnessed first hand the positive impact the mentoring program has had on the students' academic achievements and attitudes. I believe programs like this is needed to help children overcome life's obstacles and assist in closing the achievement gap”
